Prescribed Burn Scheduled for Hughes Lane Property
Baker City, OR – Baker County officials are providing an update to a previously announced prescribed burn at the Hughes Lane property purchased by the County in late 2022. The County’s contractor has confirmed that the burn is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, after 10:30 a.m., weather and conditions permitting.
The contractor has advised that conditions remain suitable to proceed with the burn, followed by revegetation efforts using a no-till drill. These efforts are expected to support initial seed establishment this season.
To help notify the public, reader boards will be placed in the area, including at a nearby Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) location, with additional signage being coordinated with neighboring property owners. The Baker County Road Department will also deploy electronic message signs displaying “Prescribed Burn Ahead” to alert motorists and residents.
Baker County Emergency Management has coordinated support for the operation, including assistance from the Bowen Valley Rural Fire Protection District and Baker Valley Rural Fire Protection District. Fire personnel and equipment, including a water tender, will be on site to help manage the perimeter and ensure the burn remains controlled.
Residents may see smoke in the area during and after the burn. This is a planned and carefully managed operation intended to reduce vegetation, improve land conditions, and support future land use goals for the property.
The County appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as this work is completed safely and efficiently on a short timeline.
